- First Use or After A Long Period of Non-Use
First time using a Nespresso Vertuo machine? Or maybe, you haven’t used it in a long time. To safely use your Vertuo, please keep these reminders in mind:
- Rinse and clean the water tank before filling it only with fresh drinking water. Put the water tank in place.
- Ensure the capsule container and the cup support (if necessary for the selected cup size) are in place. For your safety, operate the machine only with cup and capsule container in position.
- Plug the machine into the outlet.
- Turn the machine “ON” by pushing the button. The button will gradually illuminate as the machine heats up in approximately 15 seconds.
- Steady light indicates the machine is ready.
- Place a cup of at least 0.5 l under the coffee outlet.
- Close the machine if open and lock the machine by turning the lever left to the lock symbol on the machine head.
- Press the button 3 times within 2 seconds to start cleaning and let the cleaning procedure complete automatically. It will take less than 2 minutes before a flow comes out. The procedure consists of 3 cycles of pumping water in.
- This operation may take up to 5 minutes. The procedure can be stopped at any time by pushing the button. The button will go to steady light. In case you want to resume the cleaning process, push the button again.

How to Turn Off Nespresso Vertuo (Energy Saving Concept)
The Nespresso Vertuo machine can be turned “OFF” at any time by holding the button for 3 seconds. Further, with its Energy Saving Concept, it has an automatic ‘OFF’ mode – the machine will turn off automatically after 9 minutes of non-use.
- Coffee Preparation
Here’s a quick guide to help you prepare a cup of coffee or espresso using your Nespresso Vertuo machine.
- Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water.
- Turn the machine “ON” by pushing the button.
- Lights will blink for approximately 15 seconds while the machine is heating up.
- Steady light indicates the machine is ready.
- The factory settings and recommended cup sizes are: Alto: 414 ml, 230 ml for Mug / 150 ml for Gran Lungo / 40 ml for Espresso.
- The cup support has 3 positions and can be temporarily removed to accommodate various cup sizes.
- Place a cup of sufficient capacity under the coffee outlet. Risk of scalding may occur due to overflowing.
- Unlock and open the machine head completely.
- This machine operates with Nespresso Vertuo capsules. Nespresso classic capsules cannot be used in this machine.
- Insert a capsule with the dome shape at the bottom. Be careful not to injure yourself on sharp points or trap your fingers when reaching inside the machine.
- Close the head and lock the machine by turning the lever left to the lock symbol on the machine head.
- Push the button to start the coffee preparation. It will take some time before the coffee flow comes out (due to barcode reading and coffee pre-wetting).
- To stop the coffee flow early, push the button
- To manually top off your coffee, push the button and push again to stop when desired volume is reached.
- Turn the lever to the right and open the head to automatically eject the capsule.
- Turn the machine “ON” by pushing the button.
- Cleaning and Maintenance

Note: The machine has a predefined cleaning procedure that can be launched at user discretion. Office use: Daily cleaning.

- Descaling
Aside from cleaning your Nespresso Vertuo regularly, it is important that you descale it as well.
- Turn the machine “ON” by pushing the button. Blinking light: heating up. Steady light: ready.
- Open the machine head and let the used capsule be ejected.
- Close the machine and leave the lever in “UNLOCKED” position: towards the front of the machine.
- Empty the cup support and the used capsule container.
- 5. Fill the water tank with 1 unit of Nespresso descaling liquid and add 0.8 l of water.
- To enter the descaling mode, hold the button for at least 7 seconds.
- The button will start blinking rapidly. You now have 45 seconds to confirm you want to enter descaling mode.
- Follow the next step to do so otherwise the machine will return to the ready for brewing coffee mode.
- Lock the machine by turning the lever left to the lock symbol on the machine head and unlock by turning right. Hold the button again for at least 7 seconds in “UNLOCKED” position.
- Place a container (minimum volume: 0.8 l) under the coffee outlet.
- To start descaling, lock the machine by turning the lever left and push the button. The machine will stop automatically when complete.
- Empty, rinse and clean the water tank and cup support thoroughly.
- Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water and put it back in place on the machine.
- When ready, push the button to rinse the machine. The machine will stop automatically when complete. The procedure can be stopped at any time by pushing the button.
- To exit the descaling mode, hold the button for at least 7 seconds.
- The button will stop blinking rapidly and become steady.
- Descaling is completed. Allow the machine to dry for 10 minutes before using it.
- The machine is now ready for use.
