Even though the materials aren’t the highest quality, this coffee machine is quite sturdy. Plus, its size is compact enough to fit most modern kitchens and the color variations make it easy to match with your style.

Set Up and Operation

Since the Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista Espresso and Cappuccino Maker is a semi-automatic machine, it is fairly easy to use. In fact, it’s one of the simplest semi-automatic coffee makers since it can automatically brew and froth with just a single press of a button.

Here’s a quick guide to help you make your first coffee on this machine easily:

  • The On/Off button is at the lower left side of the unit – ‘I’ for On and ‘O’ for Off. Once you turn the machine on, you can all the button lights pulsing. Button light pulses when the unit is heating up, brewing, frothing, or cleaning. When the button light turns steady, it means that the function is ready.
  • Make sure that there’s enough water in the water reservoir. In case you don’t have enough water, the button lights will keep flashing. Likewise, if the milk reservoir isn’t properly inserted or if its not inserted at all, the ‘Latte’ and ‘Cappuccino’ buttons will not illuminate.
  • Make sure to prime the unit when using it for the first time. Priming this coffee maker simply means running hot water to the brewing head and the frothed milk dispensing tube – no coffee and milk. You will find a complete guide in the user manual that comes with the unit.

You simply have to put coffee grounds in the filter (single or double shot) and insert the portafilter under the brewing unit. Then, if you want to prepare specialty coffee drinks, you simply have to put cold milk up to the ‘Max’ level of the milk reservoir. Decide how much froth you want, and press the button of your desired drink.

Features and Functionalities

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista Espresso and Cappuccino Maker has some unique features and functionalities ideal for both new coffee lovers and professional baristas alike.

  • 15-Bar Pump. This coffee maker can produce just enough pressure to extract bold, rich-flavored cups of coffee.
  • One-Touch Control Panel. At the upper front panel, you will find three buttons – ‘Espresso’, ‘Cappuccino’, and ‘Latte’. At the left of the buttons, you will see icons for single shot and double shot servings. You can press once to select a single serving, and press twice for selecting the double shot serving. Pressing the button for around 3 seconds will activate the manual function indicated at the right of the button that you press.
  • Automatic Milk Frothing. If you want to prepare a cappuccino or latte, you don’t need to brew and froth your milk. All you have to do is set the froth you want (‘Latte’ for less and ‘Cappuccino’ for more). Then, press once if you want a single shot or twice if you want a double shot. In just a few seconds, your cappuccino or latte will be ready to drink.
  • Removable Milk Reservoir. This coffee maker comes with a removable milk tank, meaning you can store it in the refrigerator and you can easily clean or refill it.

Maintenance and Cleaning

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista Espresso and Cappuccino Maker comes with an automatic cleaning function for the frothed milk dispensing tube. When pressed for 3 seconds, the ‘Latte’ button will allow you to purge steam through it.

Each time you finish making your coffee, always do the cleaning before you put the milk reservoir in the refrigerator. This is to make sure that no milk reside will be stuck inside the tube and to avoid any clogging.

To clean all parts of the coffee maker, make sure to turn it off and unplug it. You can wash the portafilter, filters, milk reservoir, and water tank with water. However, take note that the filter baskets, water tank, and portafilter are not dishwasher safe.

For the brew head, you can clean it by running hot water through it. Don’t leave the portafilter attached to the machine when not in use – doing so will adversely affect the seal of the brew head and the portafilter.

You need to deep clean the filters every 90 days, while the machine needs deliming, which is indicated in the product’s manual. Make sure to follow the recommended cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain the quality and performance of your Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista Espresso and Cappuccino Maker.

Mr. Coffee Café Barista Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Users Review

Here’s what people are saying about Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista Espresso and Cappuccino Maker, White:

“I love it! It’s easy to use, doesn’t burn the coffee or milk and all from my own home. I decide to try and live a more environmentally friendly life in 2018. 1. No more take away coffee cups! To help me out I decide that getting an espresso maker for home would stop my morning stop at McDonald’s drive through on the way to work. (Yes they are happy to fill my keep cup but why waste the petrol or $5 a day). The machine saves me big dollars and the hardest decision now is that coffee beans to buy.

It’s quick to clean and I love that I don’t need to froth the milk myself as it gives me time to cook breakfast.” – Stacey

“Other than 1. some priming issues prior to first use and 2. my impatience waiting for it to heat up for a couple minutes prior to use and 3. it not fitting my favorite (very tall) cups I love this machine! It’s attractive and takes up less space than a traditional coffee maker, easy to use, froths plant-based milks: soy, almond, coconut, flax, hemp, etc. VERY well! Plus, it makes coffee shop quality drinks very cheaply and is better than keurig because no k-cups and fancier drink options

Tips: I keep a compost pail next to it to smack the grinds into after making a cup. Don’t let the grinds sit or they will harden into a brick. Coffee grinds are great for composting or can be added directly to garden/planter soil for a nutrient boost. Turn it on before you start preparing the coffee and milk to minimize your wait time. Store milk compartment in refrigerator between uses. Use straw width pipe cleaner to hand clean milk compartment tubes as needed. Use well filtered water to prevent mineral build-up.” – SMM304

“Great machine for the price. I spent a good amount of time researching for an espresso and latte machine. I looked over different brands and costs and while I agree this is not a expensive or professional machine, it does make great espressos and lattes. Very easy to use and clean and definitely love the taste. My daughter loves the hot chocolate with frothed milk and even my wife likes her cappuccinos. I read a few reviews regarding water leaks and I can’t see this to be a problem, it’s more on if the water tank is inserted properly. I also have a Kerrigan machine and they both are almost the same size. One more thing, the machine starts and warms water faster (no more than a 5-7 minutes). Definitely a great buy so far. If you are looking for a decent price and great coffee maker this is the one for you.” – Amazon Customer

“First, I am amazed that people give this 1 star if it breaks after 1. 5 years of use, making 4-5 espresso shots per day, 365 days a year. Unless you are purchasing a commercial grade machine for $1000, I don’t think anyone can expect more than 2000 shots of espresso from any machine. Even if only making espresso, you’d save $0.50 per shot at home…. 2000 x $0.50 = $1000 savings. Does that really equal 1 star?? Ownership Time: We’ve owned this for 6 months so far. Probably made 150+ large cappuccinos (double shots) during that time. Quality of Taste: This machine is consistent with taste and has a good quality flavor (Lavazza espresso is amazing). I wish it didn’t mix as much water with the espresso as it does at times. Sometimes I’ll use a double shot of espresso while selecting a single shot on the machine, but most times I’ll make it with default machine settings. Temperature Inconsistency: If this machine is left on for 10 minutes before making a drink, it will be extremely hot. You WILL burn your mouth. Because of this, we only turn it on when ready to make a drink. We learned this by burning our mouths. This inconsistency is the reason I give it only 4 stars. Volume inconsistency: We noticed that if the machine is on for a while, the cup size changes. I don’t know if this is related to the temperature inconsistency or not. Once we learned to turn it on right before making a drink, the cup size became more consistent. Clean Up: This is very easy to clean up. The milk reservoir is nice when making drinks everyday. Machine Noise: This is a noisy machine, although I have never known a cappuccino machine to be quiet. If you are expecting it to be as quiet as a Keurig, you’ll be disappointed.

9/20/20 Update: Still going strong. As a matter of fact, with all the working from home from the pandemic, we’ve probably made another 300 large cappuccinos in the last year. I would say the machine has made 500+ large cappuccinos (double shots) since we’ve owned it. From this, we probably have saved $1500 versus going to Starbucks (which is not good compared to cappuccinos made with Lavazza).” – Mark

“Just picked up the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino maker. Read all the reviews, most good, some not so good. Watched a youtube vid of someone comparing an espresso made from a $3000 machine vs a $150 machine. The person(who sells the $3000 machine) had a really hard time telling the difference. That sold me that the machine doesn’t really matter too much…it’s the grind of the coffee and the beans themselves. This machine is the bomb. If you like coffee…this is for you. Dead simple to use, simple to clean. Watch the many youtube videos on it..and yes, it is still great today, just as it was years ago when it came out. Is there better machines out there? Of course, but if you want one that is PROVEN to work over time, get this one. I would recommend getting a good tamper…the plastic one that comes with it is pretty flimsy. Go for it. You won’t regret it. Promise.” – Terry G.
