With clearly labeled parts, the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista has a well-thought-out overall design. Plus, all parts are removable, which is convenient for refilling and cleaning.
The buttons on the front of the machine are clearly labeled with the corresponding drinks, and there are automatic and manual options. The milk reservoir conveniently fits within the unit, and it is removable which means that you can store leftover milk in the fridge when not in use.
The frother also has a clearly labeled knob that controls how much frother goes into every drink. This espresso maker also includes a measuring spoon that doubles as a tamper. There are two filters that fit into the portafilter – one for a single shot and another for a double shot.
Additionally, the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista features two drip trays. One drip tray sits within the unit underneath the portafilter, which can cater to full-size mugs. The second drip tray pulls out from underneath the milk reservoir, creating less room for the espresso to spill out for those who prefer smaller cups.
Plus, the water reservoir in the back is removable so you can easily fill it up, dump out any excess water after use, and clean it. Aesthetically, the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista looks modern and sleek, making it a great fit with most kitchen appliances.
Setup and Ease of Use
Setting up the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista is fairly easy to do. This is partly due to the simplicity of the espresso maker, but can also be attributed to the instructions manual that come with it which is fairly easy to understand.
To make an espresso, you simply have to pick the filter size you want (single or double) and place it into the portafilter. Next, scoop the grounds into the filter and press them down with the tamper until they are about 1/8-inch below the top of the filter – this is based on the manual’s recommendation.
Then, attach the portafilter to the machine and place a small cup on the pull-out drip tray. Finally, press the top button or the ‘Espresso’ button – one time for a single shot or twice for a double – and let the machine do its work. To make a latte or cappuccino, the process is pretty similar when making an espresso except that there’s the added step of adding milk to the milk reservoir.
After attaching the portafilter with coffee grounds into the machine, simply fill the reservoir with milk. The machine will dispense the appropriate amount of milk froth based on the beverage you choose. Next, make sure that the frothed milk dispensing tube is directed into your cup. Adjust the froth control knob to control how much froth is added to your drink.
Then, press the ‘Latte’ button – once for a small beverage, twice for a large one – and let the machine do its work. The process is the same if you want a cappuccino, except that you press the ‘Cappuccino’ button.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Thoroughly clean the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista after every use. To clean it out after making an espresso, remove the portafilter and dump out the espresso grounds. Next, rinse both the filter and portafilter with warm water.
Then, reattach the portafilter to the unit without any coffee grounds and run it through a single espresso cycle. The manual instructs users to remove the portafilter after running it through a cycle. After making a milk-based drink, you need to clean the milk reservoir. To clean it, leave the leftover milk in the reservoir, then place a large cup under the frothing tube.
Then, adjust the froth control knob to the ‘Clean’ position. Press and hold the ‘Latte/Clean’ button until the machine starts up. Once the machine stops, dispose the contents in the cup and the remaining milk. Then, thoroughly wash the milk reservoir and all of its parts – this piece and the lid are dishwasher safe.
The manual suggests dumping out any excess water left in the water reservoir in between each use, then cleaning it out with soapy water. Note that the portafilter, filters, and water reservoir are not dishwasher safe.
Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista Users Review
Here’s what people are saying about the Mr. Coffee Espresso and Cappuccino Maker Café Barista.
“Initially, when buying this espresso maker on amazon it seemed almost too good to be true, however, I made the purchase anyway, AFTER making the purchase I read the reviews and to be honest I was pretty nervous to receive the machine after reading many of the negative reviews. I’ve had this machine for nearly a month now and I’ve gotta say, it’s totally exceeded my expectations. Not only does this machine give you the option to make yourself a single or double espresso with the touch of a button, it also makes fantastic cappuccinos and lattes SO EASILY (even with plant based milks)!! as well as this my other concern was that my mugs of choice would not fit in the machine as my boyfriend has a (more expensive) breville that only allows for very short mugs or espresso cups. This machine has such an adaptable design in terms of allowing for any size of mug, you can remove the bottom compartment to fit in a larger container (this works perfectly for when im making iced coffee in a mason jar) and it even has a hidden compartment you can pull out to make the base taller for smaller cups like an espresso cup! To be fair I’ve only had this machine for one month so I can’t speak to the long-term durability of it, but I have not had a single issue with it and if anything, I’ve been extremely pleased with its performance, capabilities, and compact design (especially considering the very affordable price!) I definitely recommend this machine to people looking for a great machine for a smaller sized kitchen and also for beginners as it is so easy to use!” – Zahra Khan
“This little machine was a game-changer for me. I spent weeks researching espresso machines and chose this one for 1) ease of use/cleaning 2) price 3) latte focused. Two months later, I have been consistently blown away on all three! For those who say it’s wears after some use, are you cleaning it properly? Cleaning is SUPER easy and I do it after each use and have had zero issues. You just turn the nob to “clean” and then hold down the latte button until the cleaning cycle begins. It self cleans with just one button and I have never had any issues. Also make sure to keep the water up! As long as you’re following the cleaning directions, you should have no problems! I have tried it with both almond and regular milk and find that I get the best foam with 2% regular milk OR califia’s almond barista milk in the blue box. I moved from a bustling neighborhood with lots of coffee shops and I was certain I would miss it…I don’t! This machine saves me money and time, and the lattes are easily as good as the ones I would buy. Highly recommend!” – Shane and Celie
“This espresso machine is amazing for the price. It’s compact, pretty sturdy for its size and it looks good in the kitchen. I’ve experimented with this machine in the last few weeks and I’ve liked it more and more with each passing day. Here’s a tip for those of you who like a frothy cup of cappuccino. Make sure your milk is at room temperature and is not straight from the fridge cold. This machine does not come with a frothing wand so you can’t warm the milk up that way and get it to froth. The little milk chute froths the milk and pumps it directly into your cup of coffee. If your milk is cold, the milk chute does not have enough power or heat to froth the milk. What I do is take my milk out from the fridge and heat a little up in a small pan over the stove to get it a little warm and then I pour it into the coffee machine’s milk dispenser. This helps it froth up better and the machine sends a perfect stream of hot frothy milk into the waiting cup. Sure it takes a little more time but why rush when you’re making yourself a great cup of coffee to start the day :)” – Luanne
“I did a pretty extensive search before purchasing this one, and figured start cheap, see how quickly it dies, and then justify a fancy machine. We watched for an Amazon sale, but even full price, this machine is worth its weight in gold. We have had this cappuccino machine for three years now, so I am going to review it in all its glory. No, the milk froth isn’t consistent quantity every cup, but there is a custom button to make it just how you like it every single time. We pair this with Illy ground espresso for a fantastic morning routine. The only downside is that now we are so spoiled with a daily dose of frothy caffeine, we are forced to buy coffee when we are traveling. I purposefully have forgotten how to insert a k-cup or brew an actual pot of coffee. So, buy it. There are fancier machines out there, but this is the best starter cappuccino machine I’ve seen. Oh, and the milk frother and attachments “say” don’t machine wash, but we do and it’s fine.” – Nelsons
“To be honest I had low expectations, I over research everything. People call me a foodie and I love process while cooking, doing it right. I almost hate to admit how much I love this machine though. I also bought a Delonghi espresso maker (the highest rated one) and i use the Mr. Coffee one most days. The milk container is so easy to use and makes very good steamed milk and foam. I love how easy it is and in the early morning, I want simple. And if I want if different i use the manual option on the buttons. It makes a great cup of espresso, latte, or cappuccino. I did get a good grinder though, not the Mr. Coffee grinder, a Baratza. Bottom, line is if your trying to impress someone get something else. If you like variety in your coffee drinks, want simple, easy clean up, and don’t want to spend a fortune, well, I don’t know of any other machine that does it all.” – VanBrudenrijden
“This is the best expresso machine! It is obviously more costly than a cheap expresso machine but is way cheaper than super industrial and expensive machines. It’s an awesome value that is compact with a water reservoir (so nice!) and yet looks legitimate at the same time. It’s definitely worth the investment. My husband makes cappuccinos and lattes (hot and cold) every single day with it and we absolutely love it! It’s super easy to use to get the coffee beverage you want with easily detachable parts for simple clean up which is exactly what I wanted since I’m a bit of a clean freak. I love that you can detach the milk reservoir and keep the milk in there and just store it in the fridge until you need it again. You can even clean the milk stem out after each use and still keep the milk in the reservoir to make sure it’s sanitary and clean without having to dump all the leftover milk out! This is definitely a powerful machine that isn’t overly large and is worth every penny!” – Frank
