How to Use the R2D2 French Press
A French press is a brewing mechanism that utilizes a filter to extract coffee that has been completely saturated by water. When correctly used, it makes one of the strongest cups of coffee out there.
The R2D2 French Press works just like any other French press coffee maker. You simply have to pour your coarsely-ground coffee and boiling water into the press.
Let step for about 4 to 6 minutes – or a little longer if you like your coffee on the Dark Side – then slowly push the plunger down. A full carafe will give you 32 oz. (about 4 cups) of hot coffee.
Are you more of a Star Wars expert than a coffee connoisseur? Don’t worry – here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use a French press.
- Heat water.
Start the water heating first because it takes the most time. Coffee is 98% water – if possible, use clean filtered water with a low mineral content for the best taste.
A water temperature of about 195 to 205°F is considered ideal for brewing coffee; however, if you don’t have a kitchen thermometer, go ahead and heat the water to a full boil.
After you bring the water to a boil, turn it off then wait for a minute or two. Or, you can cool the boiling water with a shot of cool water.
Bonus Tip: The boiling water can be used to preheat and clean the French press before brewing.
- Grind your own coffee beans.
Freshly ground coffee is easily ten times better compared to pre-ground coffee. Even non-coffee connoisseurs will notice the significant difference in flavor and aroma of the cup of coffee.
Bonus Tip: for the best taste, freshly ground coffee is more important than having perfectly-sized coffee grounds.
But if the cost of a burr grinder is out of your budget, choose to buy whole beans and grind at home using a cheap blade grinder – this is still better than buying pre-ground coffee.
- Use a coarse grind.
You want a coarse grind with large pieces – this is so that the grinds don’t slip through the mesh filter.
However, the grinds should not be so large that you can’t extract most of the goodness; this will produce a weak, bland coffee.
Bonus Tip: The consistency of the grinds should be similar to rock salt.
- Combine hot water and ground coffee.
Pour ground coffee into the beaker; gently shake it back and forth to level out the grounds. Then, add the hot water – the pour should be relatively quick while getting all of the coffee grounds wet.
Bonus Tip: The rule of thumb is for each 8 oz. water (1 cup), you have to use 2 tablespoons of coffee. Depending on how strong you like your coffee, you can add either more or less coffee grinds.
- Pour, stir, and cover.
Evenly pour hot water over the grounds and stir to ensure that the hot water gets all of the coffee grounds wet.
Then, stir to make sure that all the grounds are immersed in the water and to help with the extraction of the tasty compounds and oils of the coffee.
Bonus Tip: Instead of using a metal spoon, use a chopstick – it’s great for stirring! Metal spoons can cause micro-cracks in the glass of the French press and it increases the chances of it shattering.
Also, when you cover the French press for steeping, don’t let the filter touch the brew to avoid cooling it more than necessary.
When steeping coffee, four minutes is the standard time; however, if you would like a stronger brew, you can steep it for as long as 10 minutes.
For smaller cup French presses, you may be able to get away with 2 minutes of steeping.
Bonus Tip: Try these variations to see which one you like the best – extra dark (10-minute steeping), standard (4-minute steeping), short steep (30-60-second steeping), or no steep (plunge immediately after stirring).
- Press down on the plunger.
Evenly and slowly press down on the plunger. Make sure that the plunger is vertically straight, or else the grounds will slip through the sides of the filter.
Slowly press down – just use the weight of your hand and arm to exert pressure – to avoid forcing tiny grinds through the mesh filter or to minimize stirring up the dust.
Once the plunger reaches the bottom, slowly pour the brewed coffee from the French press into your mug and enjoy your fresh cup of coffee.
- FRESHNESS AND FLAVOR: By grinding your own coffee beans, you can maximize the freshness of your coffee and get the best taste from brewing without the annoying oxidation.
